Felt Flowers 3

Here's how to make these cute flowers.
You'll need:
Felt
Button
Hot glue
Clip

First, cut out 6 pieces: 4 big, 1 medium, 1 small (the bottom one)--notice this one is shaped differently. You'll know the sizes you like.
Next with the 4 big pieces follow this tutorial until you have this:
Add the middle with hot glue:
Add the small piece with hot glue:
Add the button with hot glue:

I took a scrap piece of felt and glued it on the back, two lines of glue on opposite sides

You will be able to put in the clip like this:
 Now you have your flower!

Tutorial: Silky Flower 2

What you need:
  • silky fabric (with polyester)
  • coordinating thread
  • tulle
  • button for center piece
  • headband or clip
  • candle

1. Cut 2 rectangles of the silky fabric about 11" x 3.5
2. Round all of the edges:

3. Cut zig-zags on all the LONG ends (doesn't need to be perfect):

4. Burn all around the edges of both rectangles:

5. Cut a piece of tulle as big as your silky pieces with burned edges. Also, cut a piece of thread:

6. Layer your pieces together from bottom to top: silky fabric, silky fabric, tulle. Then fold them like a fan. Watch the video:

Now you have this:

7. Now, tie your thread around the middle of your fan, making a tight knot. Go around the whole fan 2 or 3 times to get it to stay in place. Since I was doing this without anyone around, I found it easiest to hold it like this while I tied it one handed.

Now you have this:

8. Spread the fabric out to make a circle shape. It spreads out easier than you would think.

9. Sew the bottom layer to itself on both sides. Since this is on the bottom, you can sew all the way across until close to the edge, since this part won't be seen.

10. For the sewing together the top layers, I overlapped them about a half inch (pictured below) and sewed them together near the middle (pictured 2 below). I used the naturally curled edge from the burning to hide the thread (plus the tulle is still over it).

Now yo have this:

11. Trim tulle as needed to get it into the circle shape.
12. To keep the tulle edges together you use the thread for the button to go up and through all the layers of fabric. See the video below. After watching, sew on your button.

Sew on a headband or clip for the back! Now you've got a cute flower for pictures!

Felt Flower

It was time for a girl baby shower and I wanted to make a felt flower headband. I followed this tutorial, using 4 pieces of felt like she said. When I was done with that I didn't like how it looked and when I tried adding in one more, like she said she did sometimes, it still just wasn't enough for me. So here is what I did to make it more to my taste.
First follow the tutorial she has until your flower looks like the one on the right in this picture:

Next, cut out two smaller flowers, the same shape as the first 4 (above on left).
Here's what I did next:

Here is a still picture of how it looks when you pinch this piece:

Glue the pieces to each other and then to the larger petals. Here's a tip: when you are putting the two small pieces together, don't match up the tips, leave a little space like I showed here:

So cute!

Tutorial: Simple Silky Flower

I love this flower! Why? Because I think it works especially well for an adult. I did try this on a headband for my daughter but I don't like it on the front of her head as I do my hair.
Now, the fabric button I used is an extra button I had from a shirt. I haven't seen fabric buttons you can make yourself this small, so hopefully you can find something that works for you. At the end of the post I'll show you how it looks with a bigger fabric button.
What you need:
  • Fabric with polyester (it does NOT need to be 100% polyester, just have some polyester--this is the silky fabric you would make a formal dress with).
  • Needle and thread
  • Fabric button
  • Hair clip (found at craft stores, pictured below)
  • Felt, cut into a 1" by .75" oval
  • Scissors
  • Candle
  • Glue (I used a hot glue gun)
First step: Cut your 5 petals out of the polyester into tear shapes. I didn't measure, but here is about what they turned out to be:

Burn all edges of all petals. I have a video of how to do this here.

Take one petal and sew through the tip:

Take the next petal and go through that tip:

Go around, back to the first petal and sew through both tips of petals:

Get petal 3 and go once through that then around petal 2 and 3 together. Grab petal 4, go once through that, then once through petal 3 and 4. Repeat this step with 5th petal.

Next I sew around all 5 petals (on the top), going around the circle of petals. This just keeps them all together nicely.

Now, get your button, sew through that and down to the bottom of the flower.

Grab the oval shaped felt and sew up and down through one of the long sides, two times in the same spot. Sew the thread through the felt to the other long side of the felt. Because there isn't a lot of room in the back to hide the felt, I pinched it in (so it is long and skinny) and sewed the other long side onto the flower. Sew up and down 2 or 3 times.

You can see the little puckers where I sewed the felt onto the flower:

Here's where I tied the knot, between the felt and flower:

Put a small amount of glue on the side of the clip that will be between the felt and flower, the glue touching the felt.
Here are pictures of the big and little buttons. The little looks better, I think. Hopefully you can find something like that too.
